Törökbálint

Skip as a base: Törökbálint is a 17-minute suburban rail hop from Budapest with a mansion, a hilltop lookout and a lake — a half-day, not a stay.

Törökbálint is a small town 15 km west of Budapest, now a suburb of it. Its draw is thin: a Neo-Romanesque mansion, a Baroque church founded in the Árpád age, a lookout on Anna Hill and an artificial fishing lake. Almost everyone visits from Budapest on the S10/S12 train and is back the same day. Sleep here only if you want cheap suburban beds and a rail line into Déli station.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Hungary ↗Hungary is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Hungary ↗The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion at cards and ATMs.
  • Hungary ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) bought before you drive on them.

Getting around

The town is small but spread out; buses 172 and 173 link the centre, Tükörhegy and the station, and BKK lines run to Budapest. Local single tickets cost Ft 350 in advance or Ft 450 from the driver; a metropolitan-area ticket covering the first Budapest stop is Ft 250. Budapest passes are not valid past the city boundary.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 40–50 min

S10/S12 suburban train from Törökbálint station to Budapest-Déli, about 17 min

The main reason to be here: Déli station puts you on the Buda side in under 20 min.

Budaörs

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus 140 or 172 toward Budapest, then a local connection

Mostly a shopping and commuter town; go only if you need the malls.

Budakeszi

caution

Door to door: About 50–70 min

Bus via Budaörs or Budapest, no direct line

Better known for its wildlife park; plan the connection first.

Érd

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Bus or train via Budapest, no direct link

Long way round for a town with little for a visitor.

Százhalombatta

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train via Budapest or a long bus ride

The archaeological park is the draw; too far for a casual hop.

Zsámbék

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Bus or train via Budapest, then a local bus

Its ruined abbey church is worth a dedicated trip, not a side stop.

Biatorbágy

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train toward Budapest then a connection, or by road

Small town; combine only if you are heading that way anyway.

Gödöllő

skip

Door to door: About 2 h

Via Budapest, HÉV or train from the east side

The royal palace is a full Budapest-side day trip, not from here.

Near the lake / train station

Cheapest beds and the S10/S12 platform, but little else on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe; the realistic risks are unlit roads and pavements outside the centre after dark, and the lack of a taxi rank — book ahead or use an app.
  • The S10/S12 station has no ticket office — buy on board or in the app before you board.
  • Budapest travel passes stop working at the city limits; buy the correct zone ticket.
  • Most sights are appointment-only or unstaffed: the Local History Collection opens by arrangement.
  • Evening buses thin out after about 21:00; check the last departure back to Budapest.
