Major city · Serbia

NišНиш

Give Niš 1–2 nights: fortress, Skull Tower and Red Cross camp in a day, then move on toward Sofia, Skopje or Belgrade.

Niš is Serbia's third city and the crossroads between Belgrade, Sofia and Skopje, with Roman, Ottoman and 20th-century layers packed into a walkable centre. Most travellers use it as one or two nights on the north–south route, or as the grill-and-history stop between Belgrade and Bulgaria. Sights are close together; the city rewards an early start more than a long stay.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Serbia ↗Serbia is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • Serbia ↗Foreign visitors must be registered with the police after arrival; hotels do it, but in private rentals ask your host to confirm.
  • Serbia ↗Serbia does not accept entry into Kosovo from a third country as entry into Serbia. If you plan to cross between Kosovo and Serbia, check your government's advice for both before you book.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: fortress, main square, Tinkers Alley and the market are within about 20 minutes on foot. City buses have been free for everyone since July 2025. Taxis are metered — flagfall about 95 dinars plus about 45 dinars per km, most rides 150–300 dinars. The bus station sits just north of the river; the railway station is about 2 km west of the main square, a 25–30 min walk.

Watch out

Safety

Niš is generally calm and safe for tourists; the real issues are traffic, unmarked taxi fares and pickpocketing in crowded markets. Keep bags zipped at the green market and bus station.
  • International and many domestic trains are replaced by buses or cancelled while the line is rebuilt: check srbijavoz.rs before planning a rail day.
  • Insist the taxi meter is switched on; agree the price before any out-of-town ride.
  • Park only in marked zones and pay by card or SMS — unpaid parking can mean a fine of about €12 (≈ US$14).
  • Smoking is still common in cafés and bars despite partial bans.
  • Summer afternoons in July and August are hot; shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
