Niš is Serbia's third city and the crossroads between Belgrade, Sofia and Skopje, with Roman, Ottoman and 20th-century layers packed into a walkable centre. Most travellers use it as one or two nights on the north–south route, or as the grill-and-history stop between Belgrade and Bulgaria. Sights are close together; the city rewards an early start more than a long stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake; three cheek kisses among friends — follow the other person's lead; avoid: A limp handshake or avoiding eye contact
- Hospitality: Accept the rakija or coffee; refuse food twice before it sticks; avoid: Refusing everything
- Churches: Covered shoulders and knees; stand during services; avoid: Hands in pockets, loud talk
- Conversation: Sport, food, music, travel; avoid: Kosovo, NATO, Srebrenica, unless your host starts it
- Three fingers: Know that the raised thumb, index and middle finger is a Serbian nationalist salute; avoid: Using it as a joke
Scams and watch-outs
- International and many domestic trains are replaced by buses or cancelled while the line is rebuilt: check srbijavoz.rs before planning a rail day.
- Insist the taxi meter is switched on; agree the price before any out-of-town ride.
- Park only in marked zones and pay by card or SMS — unpaid parking can mean a fine of about €12.
- Smoking is still common in cafés and bars despite partial bans.
- Summer afternoons in July and August are hot; shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
Niš is generally calm and safe for tourists; the real issues are traffic, unmarked taxi fares and pickpocketing in crowded markets. Keep bags zipped at the green market and bus station.
