Appingedam
Give Appingedam one night, or a half-day stop between Groningen and Delfzijl: the medieval centre is 90 minutes on foot, and the hanging kitchens are the reason to come.
Appingedam is a small Groningen town of about 12,000 people whose 14th- and 15th-century trading wealth left a compact centre of brick façades, a Romano-Gothic church and the hanging kitchens over the Damsterdiep canal. The historic core is small enough to walk in an afternoon; most travellers see it as a stop on the Groningen–Delfzijl rail line or as a quiet base for the Eemsdelta coast.
