Groningen is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands and a university town: about 200,000 residents, roughly 50,000 students, and more bikes than people. The historic centre sits inside a canal ring (the diepenring) and is compact enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes. It is 2 h from Amsterdam by direct train, so it works as a 2-night base for the northern provinces rather than a stop on a western loop.

Getting around

Walk inside the canal ring; the centre is car-free in parts and parking is expensive. Bikes are the fastest option — rent one and any trip across town takes under 20 min. Buses run through Central Station (stop 'Hoofdstation') and Grote Markt; pay by card, cash is not accepted. Park & Ride on the ring road (Sontweg, Haren, Hoogkerk, Kardinge) is free to park with a cheap bus into town.

Watch out

Safety

Groningen is a safe, walkable city; the real risks are bikes (yours being stolen, and bikes crossing your path), dark unlit paths along the canals at night, and heavy student drinking on Poelestraat and Peperstraat at weekends.
  • Bike theft is common: use a second, strong chain lock, not just the built-in one.
  • Buses no longer take cash; bring a Maestro-friendly card or a contactless card that works in the Netherlands.
  • Do not drive into the centre: one-way streets, car-free zones and paid parking throughout.
  • Winter days are short (about 08:45–16:15 daylight) and snow can close bike paths for a few days.
