Oldambt is a low, open polder region in the far northeast of Groningen province, on the German border. Winschoten is the main town, with three traditional windmills and a compact centre; Bad Nieuweschans has thermal baths; the Blauwestad project added an 800-hectare lake for boating. It is a quiet, car- or bike-shaped destination, not a city break.

Getting around

A car is fastest; the A7 crosses the region east–west. Bikes work well on the signposted cycle network between Winschoten, Scheemda, Midwolda and the lake. Trains run Groningen–Scheemda–Winschoten–Bad Nieuweschans (2x/hour to Winschoten, 1x/hour onward). Bus 13 links Winschoten with Heiligerlee and Westerlee; bus 17 links Winschoten and Scheemda stations via Beerta, Finsterwolde, Oostwold and Midwolda.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are cycling on dark polder roads without lights, sudden weather on the open Dollard coast, and long empty stretches with no phone signal or shop.
  • Shops close on Sundays; supermarkets in Winschoten and Scheemda open Sunday afternoons, village shops often do not.
  • The rail link east to Leer is a replacement bus, not a train: allow extra time and check the operator before you travel.
  • Windmills and small museums keep short, seasonal hours: check before you cycle out.
  • The north of the region is very sparse: no village shop for long stretches, so carry water.
