Bourtange is a five-pointed star fort on the German border, rebuilt to its 1742 plan and finished in 1992. Everything worth seeing sits inside the moat and takes half a day on foot. It is a day trip from Groningen or a single overnight, not a base: the nearest towns with shops and trains are Winschoten and Stadskanaal, 25 minutes by car.

Getting around

On foot. The whole fort is a few minutes across; park at the entrance by the information centre. In summer a small tourist bus and, on some days, a horse carriage run through and around the fort — ask at the information centre, no advance booking. Bikes can be rented by guests of the fort lodgings and at one farm hotel.

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are thin bus service, dark unlit paths around the moat after dusk and ice on the brick streets in winter.
  • Public transport is slow and not cheap: Groningen takes about 1 h 30 min via Winschoten and bus 11.
  • Museums run daily 10:00–17:00 mid-March to end of October, weekends only in winter.
  • Fort lodgings reception closes at 17:00; arrive before that or you may not get your key.
  • Few shops outside the walls; buy what you need in Vlagtwedde or Stadskanaal.
  • Crossing into Germany is minutes away by road — carry ID.
