Nairn is a small seaside town on the Moray Firth, 20 minutes by train from Inverness and on the road to Aberdeen. It has two beaches, two golf courses, a child-friendly museum and Fort George within a short drive. Most travellers use it as a soft landing after Inverness or a beach break inside a Highlands trip. The town itself is compact and walkable; the surrounding sights need a car or a taxi.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Stagecoach Bus 10 runs along the A96 every 30 min between Inverness, Nairn, Forres and Elgin. Bus 20 loops between the town centre, Sainsbury's and the hospital on weekdays. Fort George, Cawdor Castle and the golf courses need a car, a taxi or a long walk; taxis are booked by phone. Green Hive hires e-bikes on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Watch out

Safety

Nairn is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are cold water and strong currents on the beaches, fast traffic on the A96, and midges on still summer evenings near the woods.
  • Platform 2 (towards Aberdeen) is reached by a footbridge with no lift; step-free access is only on the Inverness side.
  • Fort George is an active army base and is expected to close in 2032; check opening times before you travel.
  • Nairn Museum opens April–October only.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G with dead spots outside town; there is no 5G here.
  • Summer events (Highland Games, Book & Arts Festival) fill beds; book ahead.
