Urbenville is a village of about 320 people on the Clarence Way in the New England region of New South Wales, roughly halfway between Tenterfield and the Queensland border. It exists for travellers as a fuel, food and bed stop on a slow, twisting road, with state forest and national park country around it. There is no taxi, no bus, no bank and no ATM, so you need your own car and cash before you arrive. One night covers it; two if you want to walk the Tooloom rainforest loop and camp.

Getting around

Private transport is essential. There is no taxi and no local bus, and the nearest car rental agencies are in Lismore. Fuel is at Urbenville Motors and at the Ampol outlet at the general store; both close in the afternoon and are shut on Sunday at Urbenville Motors. Distances between sights are 15–25 km on rural roads, so plan fuel and daylight together.

Drive Tooloom Road south-west about 22.5 km (14 mi); picnic area on the right

Lookout, picnic area with toilets and barbecues, and a 1 km (0.6 mi) Grade 2 rainforest walking track, 15–45 min. Bring water, firewood or a gas barbecue, and binoculars. Open daily 7:00–19:00, free entry.

Bean Creek Falls

High-drop waterfall that only flows after rain. Steep steps, no amenities, open 24 hours.

Urbenville Forest Park

550 m north of town on the Clarence Way, signposted. 50 powered and unpowered sites, flush toilets, wood barbecues. Bookings essential; pay at the visitors information centre.

Levuka 4WD Park, Beaury Plantation Road

About 11 km (6.8 mi) north of town. Camping plus 4WD trails, bushwalking and canoeing. Bring drinking water and your own canoe and lifejackets.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the drive in, no mobile reception in the parks, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and having no cash or fuel after the shops shut.
  • No banks and no ATMs in Urbenville: bring enough cash, and use EFTPOS where you can. Bank@Post at the general store runs Tuesday to Thursday only.
  • Stock up on food, essentials and medications before you arrive; shopping in town is one general store.
  • Mobile reception is little to none around Tooloom National Park and the forest roads.
  • Bean Creek Falls only flows after rainfall, and the steps from the car park to the viewing platform are steep and not wheelchair accessible.
  • The police station is not open 24 hours; the hospital emergency department is.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on the Clarence Way at dawn and dusk, and the road twists enough that highway speeds are not possible.
