Nimbin is a small village in the Northern Rivers, about 30 km from Lismore and roughly an hour's drive from Byron Bay. The 1973 Aquarius Festival turned a fading dairying town into a centre of alternative living, and the main street still trades on that image with hemp shops, cafés and murals. The village itself is walkable in a couple of hours; most visitors come as a day trip. Cannabis is openly offered in places but remains illegal in New South Wales, and police run roadside checks on the routes out.

Walk. The village is small and the main street, shops and cafés are all within a few minutes on foot. A car is needed for farm stays, Djanbung Gardens and the surrounding valleys; there is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

The village is small and generally relaxed by day, but cannabis is illegal in NSW and police patrol the exit roads. Keep valuables close, avoid Rainbow Lane after dark, and do not drive after using anything.
  • Cannabis is illegal in New South Wales. Possession or public use can bring penalties, and police run roadside patrols and drug tests on the roads out of Nimbin.
  • Assaults on tourists have been reported; take care in Rainbow Lane behind the Hemp Museum, especially after dark.
  • MardiGrass in early May brings large crowds and a heavy police presence, including roadside drug and alcohol testing.
  • Fuel and ATMs are limited in the village; fill up and draw cash in Lismore or Murwillumbah.
