Mullumbimby

Give Mullumbimby one night, or a half-day stop on the drive between Byron Bay and Murwillumbah: the town itself is two streets, the draw is the market and the hinterland.

Mullumbimby is a small Northern Rivers town of about 3,000 people, 20 minutes inland from Byron Bay on the Brunswick River. It is the market town for the surrounding hinterland: a Friday farmers market, a monthly street market, a handful of good kitchens and Mount Chincogan on the skyline. There is no beach and no big-ticket sight, so most travellers use it as a quiet bed for Byron, or as a stop on the loop to Minyon Falls and Nimbin.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 10 minutes. For everything else you need a car: the beaches at Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay are 15–25 min away, Minyon Falls about 30 min. Regional buses run to Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore, Casino and Tweed Heads, but they are thin and not a sightseeing tool.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive south on the M1, about 15 min

River mouth, fish and chips, calm swimming; the easiest half-day from town.

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive via Coolamon Scenic Drive and Whian Whian, about 30 min

Lookout is a short walk from the car park; the base-of-falls track is long and steep. Gates close in the evening.

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive via Coolamon Scenic Drive, about 15 min

Paid entry, garden and crystal displays; check current hours and price before you drive up.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive on the M1, about 20 min; regional bus also runs

Parking is the problem, not the distance: arrive before 09:00 or after 16:00.

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive via Lismore or The Channon, about 45 min

Half-day is enough; the road is winding and narrow in places.

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive on the M1 and Bruxner Highway, about 30 min

Regional services, galleries and the closest big-town supermarket run.

Murwillumbah

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Drive north on the M1, about 40 min

Combine with a Tweed River stop; the road north is fast and easy.

Burringbar Street and town centre

Walk to the pubs, cafés and the Friday market shuttle; the only real choice for a car-free night.

Outer hinterland (Main Arm, Wilsons Creek, Montecollum)

Rural stays and cabins; you need a car and expect 10–20 min of dark, winding road back at night.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet country town and generally safe to walk at night. The real risks are wildlife and unlit roads after dark, summer heat on the Chincogan climb, and swimming anywhere but a patrolled beach.
  • No beach in town: the river is for looking at, not swimming laps.
  • Regional buses are few and stop early; check the last service before you plan an evening out.
  • Rural roads are unlit and shared with wildlife after dark — avoid driving at dusk if you can.
  • Summer storms can close hinterland roads and walking tracks; check before setting out.
