The Northern Rivers runs from the Tweed border down to Grafton: surf towns on the coast, river and rainforest country inland. Distances are short on the map but public transport is thin, so pick one coastal base and treat the rest as drives. Byron Bay is the busiest and priciest; Ballina, Lennox Head and the Tweed coast are calmer and cheaper. Inland towns (Lismore, Nimbin, Casino, Murwillumbah) need a car or a tour.
