Ballina sits at the mouth of the Richmond River, 30 min south of Byron Bay and 2 h south of Brisbane on the M1. It splits into Ballina town, West Ballina (the Big Prawn) and East Ballina, where the patrolled beaches are. It is a working coastal town with a small airport, not a resort: most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Northern Rivers.

Getting around

The town is flat and the waterfront shared path links both sides, so walking and cycling cover the centre and East Ballina beaches. Local buses run daily but infrequently; the weekday shuttle between Tamar St and Ballina Fair is the useful one. Taxis and hire cars from the airport cover everything else.

Watch out

Safety

A safe coastal town by day; the real risks are unpatrolled water, rips at Flat Rock and the river mouth, and flooding in heavy-rain years. Lock the car and keep to lit streets after dark.
  • Swim between the flags: East Ballina beaches are patrolled Sep–Apr, North Creek sandbars and Flat Rock are not patrolled at all.
  • Ballina floods badly in heavy rain; the 2022 flood damaged thousands of homes. Check warnings before you book in a wet year.
  • South Ballina is across the river with no bridge: a 40-min drive around, or the intermittent ferry (check times).
  • Some blocks away from the river and main street are rougher than the waterfront suggests; keep to lit streets at night.
  • Byron Bay is 30 min away and taxis there are expensive: use the bus or drive.
