Podgorica is Montenegro's capital and road and rail hub, sitting in the lowland between the coast and the mountains. It is a modern planned city, not a sightseeing destination: most travellers use it for one night before or after a flight, or as a base for Cetinje, Ostrog and Lake Skadar. Two nights is enough to see the centre and one day trip.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Trg Republike, Hercegovačka street, Stara Varoš and Skaline are within 20 minutes on foot. City buses cost €0.90 per ride, paid to the driver. Taxis are cheap, about €0.40/km with no start fare, so most in-city rides are €3–4; agree the price first. TeslaGo works like a ride-hailing app with estimates in English.

Watch out

Safety

Podgorica is generally safe for tourists by day and night in the centre. The practical risks are summer heat, unlit pavements on the outskirts and taxi fares quoted per person: agree the price before you sit.
  • Agree taxi fares before you get in, especially at the airport where a flat €12–15 (≈ US$14–18) is sometimes quoted per person.
  • Summer heat is the main health risk: July and August regularly pass 34°C.
  • The bus station charges a €1–2 (≈ US$2–3) station tax per person, and printed tickets are needed for online bookings.
  • Winter road conditions north toward Serbia and the mountains can be poor.
