San Pedro Sula

Use San Pedro Sula as a 1-night transport hub, not a base: airport, buses and Zona Viva are fine by day, but there is little to see and nights need taxis.

San Pedro Sula is Honduras's second city and its business and transport hub, 11 km from Ramón Villeda Morales airport (SAP) and the bus gateway to Tela, La Ceiba, Copán and the Bay Islands. The centre is compact and walkable by day, but the city is a stopover, not a destination: most travellers sleep one night near the airport or Zona Viva, then move on. Plan 1 night, 2 if you need a day trip to Cusuco or Lake Yojoa.

  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • Honduras ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Honduras's migration authority or a Honduran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
  • Honduras ↗Transit San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa by day and with pre-arranged transport; do not use public buses between cities.
  • Honduras ↗Do not travel to Gracias a Dios (La Mosquitia) except with a specialist operator; several governments advise against all travel there.

Getting around

The centre is compact enough to walk by day. Taxis are the default for anything after dark or with bags: short hops run about L50–80 (US$2–3), more late at night. City buses are cheap but crowded and not aimed at visitors. The airport is 11 km out; agree the fare or use a hotel shuttle before you get in.

Restaurants, bars and malls; the usual short-stay choice. Walk only a block or two after dark, then take a taxi.

Best for early flights or a late arrival; little else around.

Centro / Parque Central

Cheapest beds and the anthropology museum, but avoid the park at night.

Watch out

Safety

San Pedro Sula's murder rate has fallen sharply since its worst years, but it is still a city where you take taxis after dark, avoid Parque Central at night and skip outer neighbourhoods. Keep to Zona Viva, the malls and the centre by day.
  • Take a taxi after dark even for a few blocks; do not walk Parque Central at night.
  • Outer neighbourhoods off the tourist trail are best avoided in daylight too.
  • Bars come and go; check a place is open and busy before committing to a night out.
  • Rainy-season downpours Sep–Nov can flood streets and delay buses.
