Afulaעפולה

Skip Afula as a destination. Use it as a one-night base or bus/train hub for Megiddo, Mount Tabor and the Jezreel Valley.

Afula is the largest town in the Jezreel Valley and its practical hub: a bus station, a railway station on the Haifa–Beit She'an line, cheap falafel and a handful of low-key sights. It has no headline attraction of its own, so most travellers sleep here one night and spend the days at Megiddo, Mount Tabor or Nazareth. Come for the logistics, not the town.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes. Superbus runs about ten internal lines; 10 and 11 together are the frequent pair (roughly every 10 min combined), 20 serves the market on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, 19 continues to Marhavia and Sulam. Pay with a Rav Kav card or contactless where accepted. Buses to the big cities stop running around 22:00.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Tel Megiddo

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus or taxi toward the Megiddo junction, then a short walk to the site

The one sight worth planning the day around; go at opening in summer.

Mount Tabor

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Bus or taxi to the base, then taxi or a long walk up the access road

Church at the summit; the road up is steep and not a walking route for everyone.

Nazareth

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Superbus or sherut taxi

Buses do not stop at the Afula railway station — use the central bus station.

Beit She'an

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by train

Train on the valley line, or bus

Roman-era city and national park; pairs well with a Megiddo morning.

Tiberias

go

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Bus 541 or 840, or sherut taxi

Sea of Galilee base; bus 840 continues from Afula.

Haifa

go

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Train on the valley line, about hourly

Useful for the airport run and for connections north.

City centre (Ha'Nasi St and around)

Walk to falafel, cafés and the central bus station; Karmel Hotel is here.

G-BaEmek / eastern edge

Shopping-mall zone on the road toward Givat HaMoreh and Tiberias; chain cafés, easy parking.

Afula Illit and Givat HaMoreh slopes

Quieter residential suburbs uphill; bus lines 2, 3, 14 connect to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Afula itself is an ordinary small city; the real planning risks are the 22:00 bus cutoff, summer heat in the valley and the security situation in the wider region — read your government's current advice before you book.
  • Intercity buses from Afula stop at about 22:00; plan the last leg or take a sherut taxi.
  • Buses from Nazareth do not stop at the railway station — check which stop you need.
  • The train runs about once an hour; missing it costs you an hour.
  • Summer in the valley is hot and humid; carry water on any Givat HaMoreh walk.
  • Check current security advice for the region before booking; the West Bank border crossing near Jenin is a separate decision.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Oct–Nov · avoid Jul–Aug (hot, humid valley), major Jewish holidays when buses stop early
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for TLV: last train and bus times field-checked, sherut fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Ha'Nasi St centre, central bus station, G-BaEmek, Givat HaMoreh slopes.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Tel Megiddo, Mount Tabor, Beit She'an, Old Afula railway station) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Holiday and hostile-arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
