Overview
Amman's sights sit on seven hills, and the stairs between them are steeper than the map shows. The trips that go wrong walk Downtown to the Citadel at noon in July, forget that Friday morning is quiet, or plan Petra as a day trip. Four clusters cover a first visit: Downtown with the Roman Theatre, the Citadel, Rainbow Street on Jabal Amman, and Jabal Weibdeh.

Go at opening or in the last afternoon hours; an hour and a half on an exposed hilltop with the Temple of Hercules and the museum as shelter.
Go in the morning before the stone heats up: 30–45 minutes, steep seats; the Folklore Museum sits inside the complex.

Walk-in hummus, falafel and tea at shared tables downtown; go before 11:30 or after 14:00; no reservation, cash likely.
