Amman's sights sit on seven hills, and the stairs between them are steeper than the map shows. The trips that go wrong walk Downtown to the Citadel at noon in July, forget that Friday morning is quiet, or plan Petra as a day trip. Four clusters cover a first visit: Downtown with the Roman Theatre, the Citadel, Rainbow Street on Jabal Amman, and Jabal Weibdeh.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Unmetered taxis quoting a flat 'tourist' fare: ask for the meter (ir Kayed) or use a ride-hailing app instead.(Scams)

Etiquette: the top three
- Mosques
- Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside, headscarf for women; no entry during the five daily prayers.
- Greetings
- A handshake is common between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand first. 'As-salamu alaykum' (peace be upon you) is a standard greeting.
- Ramadan
- No eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight, even if you are not fasting; many restaurants close until sunset.
