Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Grave is a small fortified town on the south bank of the Meuse in North Brabant, about 800 years old and squeezed into roughly 3 km². It has no rail station, so it works as a half-day stop by bus or car between Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch, not as a base. The draw is the surviving wall circuit, the 1688 Hampoort gate and the casemate museum, plus a compact old centre with around 43 national monuments per km².

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is about 1 km across and flat: walk it. Buses stop near the centre and connect to Nijmegen, 's-Hertogenbosch, Uden, Gennep and Boxmeer. A car helps for the pumping station and the casemates on the river side, where parking is easier than inside the walls.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

Bus from Grave to Nijmegen, about 30–40 min

Oldest-city claim, riverfront and a real rail hub; the natural base for this stop.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Bus line 90 towards 's-Hertogenbosch, about 1 h

Bigger historic centre and rail connections onward.

Eindhovencaution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Bus to Nijmegen or 's-Hertogenbosch, then train

Doable but a long half-day; better as a separate base.

Bredacaution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Bus to Nijmegen or 's-Hertogenbosch, then train

Plan as a full day, not a spare afternoon.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Grave old centre

A handful of small hotels and B&Bs inside the walls; book ahead in summer.

Velp (Grave)

Village just north-west of Grave with motel-style rooms and easy parking.

Nijmegen

Best base for this area: rail hub, more beds and restaurants, 30–40 min by bus.

's-Hertogenbosch

Alternative base on the same bus corridor, with a bigger historic centre.

Watch out

Safety

Grave is a quiet small town and feels safe day and night; the practical risks are uneven brick pavements, bikes in the centre and a thin evening bus service.
  • Grave has no train station: plan the bus connection or drive.
  • The casemate museum opens only April–October, weekends 13:00–17:00, and closes in bad weather; outside those days it is by appointment only.
  • Some restaurant and museum web addresses in older listings are dead; confirm before you travel.
  • Buses thin out in the evening; check the last departure back to your base.
