Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Eindhoven is the Netherlands' fifth-largest city and the country's design and technology capital, rebuilt after World War II around Philips. The centre is compact and walkable, Strijp-S holds the converted factory district, and Eindhoven Centraal puts Tilburg, 's-Hertogenbosch, Breda and Maastricht within an hour. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop between Amsterdam and the south, or as a base for North Brabant.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is car-free and small enough to walk. Buses start and end at the train station; tap in and out with a debit or credit card (OVpay, about €1.08 plus €0.194 per km). Rent a bike for the outskirts, or use the umob app for shared bikes and e-bikes. Uber and Bolt cover the city; taxis wait on both sides of the station.

Local bus or bike from the south of the city

A green edge-of-town stop, best by bike rather than as a full day out.

Efteling

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train to Tilburg, then bus towards Kaatsheuvel

A full day at the theme park; buy dated tickets ahead.

Bergen op Zoom

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

NS with a change at Roosendaal

Long for a return day; better as a stop on the way to Zeeland.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Binnenstad)

Walk to the Van Abbemuseum, 18 Septemberplein and the station; best for one night without a car.

Strijp-S

Converted Philips factories, design shops and food halls; one stop or a 15-min bike ride from the centre.

Station area

Practical for early flights and rail connections; the bus to the airport leaves from here.

Watch out

Safety

Eindhoven is a safe city by day and on the main streets at night. The real risks are bikes on the pavement, pickpockets around Stratumseind bars, and drink-spiking in late-night venues: watch your glass.
  • Bicycle theft is common: use a proper lock and the free guarded bike parks under 18 Septemberplein or in the Heuvelgalerie.
  • The centre inside the ring is a low-emission zone; diesel cars need at least emission class 5 and vans must be zero-emission.
  • Central parking garages run about €4 (≈ US$5) per hour with a €24 (≈ US$30) daily maximum; use P+R Meerhoven for €4 (≈ US$5) per 24 hours plus a €0.50 (≈ under US$1) return bus.
  • Eindhoven Airport has no buses between midnight and 06:00: check your arrival time before booking a late flight.
