Grave
Give Grave half a day: walk the 1688 Hampoort gate, the Arsenaal and the Meuse quay, then move on. Sleep in Nijmegen or 's-Hertogenbosch.
Grave is a small fortified town on the south bank of the Meuse in North Brabant, about 800 years old and squeezed into roughly 3 km². It has no rail station, so it works as a half-day stop by bus or car between Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch, not as a base. The draw is the surviving wall circuit, the 1688 Hampoort gate and the casemate museum, plus a compact old centre with around 43 national monuments per km².

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Hugging new acquaintances
- Directness: Say what you mean; expect honest, blunt answers; avoid: Taking bluntness as rudeness
- Punctuality: Be on time; diaries plan weeks ahead; avoid: Dropping in unannounced
- Money: Split bills; pay your share; avoid: Showing off wealth
- Homes: Bring flowers or a small gift; congratulate everyone at a birthday; avoid: Expecting dinner if invited for coffee
Scams and watch-outs
- Grave has no train station: plan the bus connection or drive.
- The casemate museum opens only April–October, weekends 13:00–17:00, and closes in bad weather; outside those days it is by appointment only.
- Some restaurant and museum web addresses in older listings are dead; confirm before you travel.
- Buses thin out in the evening; check the last departure back to your base.
Grave is a quiet small town and feels safe day and night; the practical risks are uneven brick pavements, bikes in the centre and a thin evening bus service.
