Breda is a compact North Brabant city of about 190,000 people, built around a military history: the Castle of Breda still houses the Dutch Military Academy and cannot be visited inside. The old centre is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, so Breda works as a one-night stop between Rotterdam and Eindhoven, or as a base for the Mastbos forest and Bouvigne Castle. Spring and early autumn are the best months; Carnaval in February and the Jazz Festival in May fill the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Breda is a safe, low-risk city; the real issues are bikes on the pavement, pickpockets around the Grote Markt on festival nights, and drinking too much at Carnaval. Emergency number is 112.
  • The Castle of Breda is a working military academy: outside only, no entry.
  • The Koepelgevangenis (panopticon prison) is not open to visitors.
  • Carnaval fills the centre for four days in February: loud, crowded and heavy on alcohol.
  • Some smaller museums open only a few days a week or by appointment: check before you go.
