Bahir Darባህር ዳር
Two nights is enough: one half-day for the Lake Tana monasteries, one for the Blue Nile Falls. Skip it if you only have a week and are staying south.
Bahir Dar sits on the south shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia's biggest lake, and is the gateway to the island monasteries and the Blue Nile Falls. It is a clean, low-rise city by regional standards, easy to walk in the centre and cheap to get around by bajaj. The catch in 2026: it is the capital of Amhara region, which the UK and US place under advice against all travel, so check your government's current advice and your insurance before booking.

Getting around
Bajajs (three-wheelers) are the main way around and cost little for a short hop; agree the price before you get in. Blue minibuses still run but are less useful for visitors. The centre is flat and walkable. For the monasteries you need a boat from the lakefront; for the falls, a car or bus to Tis Abay.

Watch out
Safety
- Amhara region is under advice against all travel from the UK and US in 2026: check your government's advice and whether your insurance still covers you.
- Self-appointed 'brokers' at the lakefront push boat trips at marked-up rates. Monastery boat trips have fixed rates — book through your hotel or a guide you chose.
- Some island monasteries do not admit women. Ask before you board which ones you are visiting.
- The road to the Blue Nile Falls is rough gravel; allow 1–1.5 h each way and expect dust.
- In the dry season the falls can be a trickle — not worth the drive if you only want the waterfall.
- Card machines often fail; carry birr in cash and check the ATM works before you rely on it.
