Nahariyya is a small coastal city of about 50,000 at the northern end of Israel's coastal railway, founded in 1934 by German Jews. It is the last train stop before the Lebanese border, which makes it the practical base for Rosh Haniqra and the Akhziv coast. The city itself is a beach town: a boardwalk, a river street running to the sea, and a spread-out layout that needs a bus or taxi between sights.

Getting around
The city is small but its sights are spread out, so plan on walking the centre and taking a bus or taxi for the edges. The train station is the northern terminus of the coastal line, with services south to Akko, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Buses connect to Haifa and Akko; the central bus station sits near the railway station.
