Nahariyya
נַהֲרִיָּה
Give Nahariyya one night as a beach-and-base stop for Rosh Haniqra and Akhziv; two nights if you want a full beach day.
Nahariyya is a small coastal city of about 50,000 at the northern end of Israel's coastal railway, founded in 1934 by German Jews. It is the last train stop before the Lebanese border, which makes it the practical base for Rosh Haniqra and the Akhziv coast. The city itself is a beach town: a boardwalk, a river street running to the sea, and a spread-out layout that needs a bus or taxi between sights.

The city is small but its sights are spread out, so plan on walking the centre and taking a bus or taxi for the edges. The train station is the northern terminus of the coastal line, with services south to Akko, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- This is a border city: check your government's travel advice and Home Front Command instructions before booking, and again before you travel.
- Beaches are unpatrolled outside the official season; ask locally before swimming.
- Friday afternoon and Saturday: most shops and many restaurants close for Shabbat, though some reopen Saturday evening.
- Sights are spread out; do not assume you can walk between the zoo, the museums and the beach in one go.
A quiet beach town, but it sits on the northern border: read your government's travel advice and follow Home Front Command instructions. The everyday risks are unpatrolled beaches, heat in July–August, and Shabbat closures.
