Skip Encs as a base: one hour is enough for the church and a meal, then move on to Miskolc, Sárospatak or Košice.
Encs is a small town of about 6,500 people in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, 40 km from Miskolc and 50 km from Košice in Slovakia. It has no blockbuster sight: the draw is the Roman Catholic church, a handful of Baroque mansions in the surrounding villages, and cheap beds for travellers crossing between Hungary and Slovakia. Most people pass through in an hour or use it as a one-night stop.

There is no local bus or taxi in Encs. Walk the centre; for the surrounding villages use regional Volánbusz services or a car. Trains run from Forró-Encs station about every two hours toward Miskolc and Budapest, and toward Košice.
