Encs
Skip Encs as a base: one hour is enough for the church and a meal, then move on to Miskolc, Sárospatak or Košice.
Encs is a small town of about 6,500 people in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, 40 km from Miskolc and 50 km from Košice in Slovakia. It has no blockbuster sight: the draw is the Roman Catholic church, a handful of Baroque mansions in the surrounding villages, and cheap beds for travellers crossing between Hungary and Slovakia. Most people pass through in an hour or use it as a one-night stop.

- Names: Family name first when written; avoid: Assuming the second name is the surname

- History: Listen; avoid: Joking about Trianon or 1956

Scams and watch-outs
- No local public transport or taxi: plan village visits around bus times or drive.
- Trains stop at Forró-Encs station, about 1 km from the centre: allow a walk.
- Village churches and mansions are often locked outside services: check locally before going.
- English is limited outside hotels; a few Hungarian phrases help.
Encs is a quiet small town and feels safe by day; the real issues are sparse evening transport, unlit village roads and limited English. Keep to lit streets after dark and book your return bus or train in advance.
