Borden-Carleton is the PEI end of the Confederation Bridge: about 700 people, a former rail-and-ferry port, and a purpose-built rest stop called Gateway Village. Almost everyone crosses it in a car within minutes. The town works as a leg-stretch, a souvenir stop and a last-chance lobster roll, not as a destination. Sleep here only if your bridge crossing lands late or you want an early start toward Summerside or Charlottetown.

Getting around

You need a car. Gateway Village is walkable once parked, and the Confederation Trail passes through town for cyclists, but there is no local transit. Maritime Bus stops in Borden on the Charlottetown–Amherst and Summerside–Borden routes.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are highway driving after a long ferry or flight, cyclists on the shoulder of Highway 1, and seasonal businesses that close without warning in the shoulder months.
  • The bridge toll is collected on the PEI side when you leave the island, not on arrival.
  • No stopping, no pedestrians and no cyclists on the bridge itself; walkers and cyclists use the shuttle to Cape Jourimain.
  • High winds can close the bridge with no fixed reopening time.
  • Gateway Village is seasonal: several shops and kitchens run roughly May–October only.
