Borden-Carleton
Stop for 1–2 hours at Gateway Village on the way onto PEI, or sleep one night if you land late; there is no reason to base a PEI trip here.
Borden-Carleton is the PEI end of the Confederation Bridge: about 700 people, a former rail-and-ferry port, and a purpose-built rest stop called Gateway Village. Almost everyone crosses it in a car within minutes. The town works as a leg-stretch, a souvenir stop and a last-chance lobster roll, not as a destination. Sleep here only if your bridge crossing lands late or you want an early start toward Summerside or Charlottetown.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- The bridge toll is collected on the PEI side when you leave the island, not on arrival.
- No stopping, no pedestrians and no cyclists on the bridge itself; walkers and cyclists use the shuttle to Cape Jourimain.
- High winds can close the bridge with no fixed reopening time.
- Gateway Village is seasonal: several shops and kitchens run roughly May–October only.
Very safe. The real risks are highway driving after a long ferry or flight, cyclists on the shoulder of Highway 1, and seasonal businesses that close without warning in the shoulder months.
