Kensington is a small crossroads town of about 1,600 people in Prince County, western Prince Edward Island, at the junction of Routes 2, 6 and 20 — 15 km east of Summerside and 48 km west of Charlottetown. It is a practical, low-cost base for the Anne of Green Gables sites at Park Corner and New London, the north-shore beaches on Malpeque Bay, and the Confederation Trail, which runs through town on the old rail line. Most travellers give it one or two nights, or pass through on the way between Summerside and Cavendish.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights are 8–21 km apart on Routes 2, 6, 20, 101 and 234, and there is no town bus service. The Confederation Trail (crushed gravel, former rail line) crosses Kensington and is good for cycling between Summerside and the north shore. Taxis exist but are limited; book ahead for evenings.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are rural driving at dusk (deer and slow farm vehicles), undertow on unsupervised north-shore beaches, and tick bites in long grass — check yourself after walks.
  • Almost everything outside the town centre closes from October to May: check opening dates before you book.
  • Anne of Green Gables Museum and Lucy Maud Montgomery Birthplace keep seasonal hours — confirm the current season and times before driving out.
  • Distances look short on the map but are rural roads with slow tractors and cyclists in summer.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on some north-shore back roads.
  • Book cottages and inns early for July–August; the island fills up.
