Ulsan is South Korea's industrial heart, 70 km north of Busan, and most travellers pass through rather than stay. What holds a trip is outside the city core: the Yeongnam Alps around Mt Gaji, the petroglyphs at Bangudae, and the east-coast sunrise cape at Ganjeolgot. The downtown wards are for eating and sleeping, not sightseeing.

Getting around

City buses are the network: flat ₩1,150 cash or ₩1,100 with a transport card, free transfer within an hour. Seated (chwaseok) buses ₩1,700 cash / ₩1,500 card; 5000-series express buses ₩3,200 cash / ₩3,000 card. Buses run to about 23:30 and restart around 05:00. Taxis start at ₩2,200 for 2 km, +20% between midnight and 04:00. The KTX station is at Eonyang, west of the city, not downtown.

Watch out

Safety

A safe industrial city with no tourist-targeted crime to speak of. The real risks are mountain weather, long bus waits after 23:30, and taxi-meter disputes — agree the fare or check the meter.
  • The KTX station is far outside the centre: budget 40–60 min by bus into Samsandong.
  • Summer brings prolonged rain and occasional typhoons; check forecasts before mountain days.
  • Bangudae petroglyphs are closed Mondays and the rock art is only fully visible in low water — check before going.
  • Confirm the taxi meter is only touched at the start and end of the ride; the night surcharge applies 00:00–04:00 only.
  • Ulsan City Tour buses need a reservation in advance.
