Perast is a 400-person baroque strip on the Bay of Kotor, 15–45 min from Kotor by road. Two islands sit offshore, one of them the church most visitors come for. The town itself is 15–20 min end to end on foot, so the decision is whether to sleep here or visit from Kotor. Sleep here for calm and a view; base in Kotor if you want choice at dinner.

On foot: the town is 15–20 min end to end. Water taxis run from the waterfront to Our Lady of the Rocks, about 5–10 min each way. Blue Line buses link Perast and Kotor; buses stop at both ends of town, outside the gates.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a tourist town of this size; the real issues are summer parking rules, narrow roads with no pavement in places, and heat on the Vranovo Brdo trail.
  • In summer you must park at one of the two lots at the town entrances and pay; the inner road is narrow and mostly private parking.
  • Wave the bus down or it may not stop.
  • The Island of St. George is a monastery island and is not open to visitors; view it from the boat or from Our Lady of the Rocks.
  • Stony beaches only, at both ends of town near the parking lots; no sand.
  • The Vranovo Brdo trail is exposed; start early and carry water.
