Okazaki sits on the Tōkaidō line between Nagoya and Toyohashi, 30 minutes from Nagoya station. It is the castle town where Tokugawa Ieyasu was born, and the home of Hatchō miso, the dark soybean paste brewed in tile-roofed warehouses by the Yahagi river. The sights cluster in one park and one old brewing street, so a half day covers the core and one night covers it without rushing.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable; a bicycle is the fastest way between the castle, the miso warehouses and Higashi-Okazaki. Buses run but signage is mostly Japanese. Meitetsu links Higashi-Okazaki to Nagoya and Centrair. JR Okazaki station is on the Tōkaidō main line; the Aichi Loop line is reached by changing at Okazaki (or at Naka-Okazaki, two stops and about four minutes away, ¥220, for the castle). The Japan Rail Pass covers JR but not Meitetsu or the Aichi Loop line.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, safe castle town; the real risks are summer heat, thin bus service to the outer temples, and miso-brewery tours that need a booking in advance.
  • Meitetsu and Aichi Loop line trains are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
  • Bus routes and timetables are mostly in Japanese: allow extra time or take a taxi.
  • Castle keep hours are 09:00–17:00; check the official park site before a late-afternoon visit.
  • August is hot and humid; for the first-Saturday fireworks book a room early and check availability before you commit.
