Seto is a small ceramics town in northern Aichi, about 40–50 minutes from Nagoya by Meitetsu. The word setomono ("Seto things") still means pottery in Japanese. Sights cluster around Owari-Seto station and the Setogura museum, so one afternoon covers the core; a second day adds a pottery class or Iwayado Park. It is a working town, not a resort: expect low prices, few English signs and early closing.

Getting around

Walk: the centre is small and most sights sit between Owari-Seto and Shin-Seto. Meitetsu buses run from Owari-Seto station to the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum (Touji Shiryoukan stop) and out to Akazu. The Meitetsu Seto line links Owari-Seto with Nagoya; the Aichi Loop Line serves Shin-Seto.

Watch out

Safety

Seto is a low-risk small city; the real issues are summer heat, narrow pavements on the hill up to Kamagami Shrine, and shops that close early. Standard Japan advice applies: 110 police, 119 fire and ambulance.
  • Most shops and small museums close by 17:00–18:00; plan the pottery and museum stops first.
  • The Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum was closed for renovation until April 2025 — check the official site for the current status before travelling for it.
  • Few staff speak English outside the main museums; carry the Japanese place name 瀬戸 and station name 尾張瀬戸.
  • Cash is still useful in small kiln shops and izakayas.
