Okazaki sits on the Tōkaidō line between Nagoya and Toyohashi, 30 minutes from Nagoya station. It is the castle town where Tokugawa Ieyasu was born, and the home of Hatchō miso, the dark soybean paste brewed in tile-roofed warehouses by the Yahagi river. The sights cluster in one park and one old brewing street, so a half day covers the core and one night covers it without rushing.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable; a bicycle is the fastest way between the castle, the miso warehouses and Higashi-Okazaki. Buses run but signage is mostly Japanese. Meitetsu links Higashi-Okazaki to Nagoya and Centrair. JR Okazaki station is on the Tōkaidō main line; the Aichi Loop line is reached by changing at Okazaki (or at Naka-Okazaki, two stops and about four minutes away, ¥220, for the castle). The Japan Rail Pass covers JR but not Meitetsu or the Aichi Loop line.
