Kovalam is a fishing village turned beach resort about 17 km south of Thiruvananthapuram, on Kerala's southern coast. Three crescent beaches — Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra — sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, backed by guesthouses, ayurveda clinics and seafood restaurants. It is a place to slow down for two or three nights between Thiruvananthapuram and Varkala, not a sightseeing base. The sand is partly black from ilmenite and monazite, so it heats up fast underfoot.

The three beaches are walkable from each other in 5–15 minutes. Auto-rickshaws cover short hops and the junction; agree the fare first, since meters are rarely used. Buses to Thiruvananthapuram leave from Kovalam Junction and the beach road. Taxis are best for airport runs and day trips.

Safety
- Walking the junction after dark: minimal street lighting and no traffic lights at the main intersection.
- Beach hawkers and tailors who follow you once you show interest — a firm no works.
- Strong currents and sudden rips: follow the lifeguards on Lighthouse and Hawa beaches.
- Vizhinjam harbour after sunset: go with a guide and leave before dark.
- Restaurants can take an hour between ordering and serving; plan around it.
- Alcohol is sold at a beer and wine store up the road, not openly on the beach.
