Lalibela is a highland town of about 15,000 people at 2,600 m in the Lasta mountains, built around 11 medieval churches cut down into pink volcanic rock and listed by UNESCO in 1978. It is one of Ethiopia's headline sights, but in late 2026 the historic north sits under advice against all travel and air links are suspended, so this page is written as a plan to hold, not a plan to book.

Getting around
The town is small and steep; most visitors walk between the church clusters. Bajajis (tuk-tuks) and minibuses cover short hops for about 25 birr per person, minimum 50 birr. No regular blue-and-white minibus routes run through town. Slip-on shoes help: you remove footwear at every church.

Safety
- Advice against all travel to Amhara from the UK and US, and suspended Lalibela flights as of 24 September 2026 — check both before any booking.
- Church entry is US$50 for adults and US$25 for children aged 9–13, valid 5 days; carry your passport with the ticket.
- Only specialised-licensed guides may take you inside the churches; federally licensed guides cannot. Hire guides at the tourist office, about 200 birr per day.
- Begging and persistent offers of 'help' are common; agree any price before you accept a service.
- ATMs are limited: Dashen Bank (Visa, up to 2,000 birr per transaction) and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia near the Ethiopian Airlines office; MasterCard only at Mountain View Hotel with a surcharge.
