Grave
Give Grave half a day: walk the 1688 Hampoort gate, the Arsenaal and the Meuse quay, then move on. Sleep in Nijmegen or 's-Hertogenbosch.
Grave is a small fortified town on the south bank of the Meuse in North Brabant, about 800 years old and squeezed into roughly 3 km². It has no rail station, so it works as a half-day stop by bus or car between Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch, not as a base. The draw is the surviving wall circuit, the 1688 Hampoort gate and the casemate museum, plus a compact old centre with around 43 national monuments per km².

Getting around
The old town is about 1 km across and flat: walk it. Buses stop near the centre and connect to Nijmegen, 's-Hertogenbosch, Uden, Gennep and Boxmeer. A car helps for the pumping station and the casemates on the river side, where parking is easier than inside the walls.
