Thale is a small Harz town at the mouth of the Bode valley, 17,600 people, built on ironworks and now on cable cars and witch folklore. The Hexentanzplatz plateau and the Rosstrappe cliff are the reason to come; the town itself is a base, not a sight. One night covers it, and Quedlinburg or Wernigerode is a better second base.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk. The gondola (Seilbahnen Thale) links the valley station to Hexentanzplatz, and a chairlift continues higher; both run roughly April to October, with weekend-only service in the winter months. Buses go from the Busbahnhof next to the Hauptbahnhof. Taxis wait at the station. A car helps for the Rosstrappe and for Rübeland caves.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are cliff edges on the Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz paths, slippery rock after rain, and Sunday closures that leave you without a meal.
  • Cable cars, the Harz Bob and the open-air theatre close or run weekends only from November to March: check dates before booking a winter trip.
  • Many restaurants and almost all shops close on Sunday, and kitchens stop serving in the early evening outside summer.
  • The Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz paths are steep and can be slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip and do not lean over the cliff edges.
  • Card payment is not universal in small guesthouses and snack bars: carry some cash.
