Quedlinburg is a small Harz town, population about 24,500, whose old town and castle hill have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992. Almost every building in the centre is timber-framed, with structures from at least five centuries. One night covers the town; add a second for the steam railway or the Brocken.

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; cobbles mean real shoes. Regional trains reach Halberstadt and Magdeburg; the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway runs from Quedlinburg into the Selke valley and the Harz. Buses cover the surrounding villages.

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are cobblestones, cash-only restaurants and the weather on the Brocken. Standard precautions apply after dark around the station.
  • Cobblestones and uneven lanes: wheeled bags and thin soles struggle.
  • Many small restaurants and shops take cash only or have a card minimum: carry euros.
  • Museum and church hours shorten from November to March, and several close on Mondays.
  • The Brocken summit is exposed and windy even in summer: bring a windproof layer.
