Quedlinburg
Stay 1–2 nights inside the old town: the half-timbered core is a 20-minute walk end to end, and the castle hill is the one thing worth a full morning.
Quedlinburg is a small Harz town, population about 24,500, whose old town and castle hill have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992. Almost every building in the centre is timber-framed, with structures from at least five centuries. One night covers the town; add a second for the steam railway or the Brocken.

Get around
The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; cobbles mean real shoes. Regional trains reach Halberstadt and Magdeburg; the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway runs from Quedlinburg into the Selke valley and the Harz. Buses cover the surrounding villages.
