Thale
Go for one full day and one night: ride the gondola to Hexentanzplatz, walk the Bode valley, then leave. Two nights only if you hike the Hexenstieg.
Thale is a small Harz town at the mouth of the Bode valley, 17,600 people, built on ironworks and now on cable cars and witch folklore. The Hexentanzplatz plateau and the Rosstrappe cliff are the reason to come; the town itself is a base, not a sight. One night covers it, and Quedlinburg or Wernigerode is a better second base.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk. The gondola (Seilbahnen Thale) links the valley station to Hexentanzplatz, and a chairlift continues higher; both run roughly April to October, with weekend-only service in the winter months. Buses go from the Busbahnhof next to the Hauptbahnhof. Taxis wait at the station. A car helps for the Rosstrappe and for Rübeland caves.

- Town centre near Rathausplatz
- Walkable to shops, the weekly market and the station; best for one night without a car.
- Bahnhofstrasse and the station
- Closest to trains and buses; plain guesthouses, easiest for an early departure.
- Bode valley and Rosstrappe side
- Hotels and holiday parks at the valley mouth; you wake up at the trailhead but need a car or a taxi for everything else.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Cable cars, the Harz Bob and the open-air theatre close or run weekends only from November to March: check dates before booking a winter trip.
- Many restaurants and almost all shops close on Sunday, and kitchens stop serving in the early evening outside summer.
- The Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz paths are steep and can be slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip and do not lean over the cliff edges.
- Card payment is not universal in small guesthouses and snack bars: carry some cash.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are cliff edges on the Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz paths, slippery rock after rain, and Sunday closures that leave you without a meal.
