Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Halle an der Saale is Saxony-Anhalt's second city, 25 minutes by train from Leipzig and about 70 minutes from Berlin on the ICE. It is a working university and science city with a compact old town, a salt-mining past and the strongest Handel connection in Germany. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Leipzig; one night lets you add the river and the GDR new town without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

HAVAG trams cover the centre and the station; buy at machines, the Marktplatz service centre or the movemix app, not from the driver. A single 1-hour city ticket is €3.40 and a 24-hour ticket €8.30 (2026 estimate). The old town itself is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altstadt (Marktplatz and Ulrichstraße)

Walk to the Marktkirche, Handel's house and most restaurants; quietest choice for one night.

Around Halle Hbf and Riebeckplatz

Best for early trains and trams; 10–15 minutes on foot to the market square, chain hotels.

Giebichenstein and the Saale

Greener, near Burg Giebichenstein and the river; tram 7 or 8 to the centre.

Neustadt

GDR-era housing blocks, cheap beds, tram 2 to the centre; interesting for architecture, not for a short first visit.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, walkable city; the main annoyances are tram ticket checks, dark riverside paths at night and pickpockets around Riebeckplatz. Standard big-city care is enough.
  • Tickets are not sold on board by drivers: use machines or the app before you board.
  • Many old-town streets are pedestrianised or one-way; park at Riebeckplatz, Hansering or Marktplatz garages and walk.
  • Some museums close on Mondays; check each site before you plan the day.
  • Long-distance buses stop at Riebeckplatz, not the central bus station.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Marktplatz, Moritzburg and the cathedral, Giebichenstein and the Saale, Neustadt.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Marktkirche, Händel-Haus, Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Christmas market and Handel Festival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
