BlarneyAn Bhlarna

Give Blarney half a day from Cork: castle, stone and gardens by 11:00, then back to the city. Sleep here only if you want a quiet base.

Blarney is a village 9 km northwest of Cork, built around one sight: Blarney Castle and the stone in its battlements. The castle, gardens and Woollen Mills fill three to four hours. Most travellers come on the 215 bus from Cork and leave the same afternoon; the village is small, walkable and quiet after the coaches go.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Getting around

Walk. The village is small and the castle gate is a few minutes from The Square. Bus Éireann 215 links Cork city and Blarney every 30 min Mon–Sat and hourly on Sunday, about 20 min. There is no railway station; the nearest is Cork Kent.

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus Éireann 215 from the village, about 20 min

English Market, Shandon and the city centre; the obvious pairing with a Blarney morning.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus 215 to Cork, then train from Kent station, about 25 min

Harbour town and cathedral; do it as a Cork day, not from Blarney.

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus 215 to Cork, then bus 226, about 45 min

Harbour, food and forts; easier with a car.

Clonakiltycaution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via N71, about 50 min

Awkward by bus; better as a West Cork overnight.

Bantryovernight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car via N71, about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a return day; sleep in West Cork.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

The Square and castle road

Everything within a 10-min walk: castle gate, Woollen Mills, pubs and the two hotels.

Station Road, north edge

B&Bs and the caravan park; quieter, but no direct access from the N20 bypass.

Cork city

Better value and more choice; bus 215 runs every 30 min Mon–Sat, hourly Sunday, about 20 min.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wet stone steps on the castle climb, traffic on the N20 approach roads and the fact that the village empties out in the evening.
  • Kissing the stone means lying on your back and leaning out over the parapet, guided by staff. Skip it if you are uneasy with heights or have back or neck problems.
  • Castle tickets are sold at the gate and online; queues build from late morning in summer, so go at opening.
  • The village is a commuter stop, not a town: after about 18:00 food options thin out.
  • Rain is likely any month; the castle walk and battlements are outdoors and stone steps get slippery.
