Cork is Ireland's second city and the south-west's food and market capital, built on an island between two channels of the River Lee. The centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon, but the harbour towns, the coast and the food scene are what justify two nights rather than a stopover. Most travellers pair it with Kinsale or Cobh, and use it as the gateway to west Cork.

Getting around

The centre is a 1 km walk end to end, so most trips need no transport. City buses run 06:30–23:30 every 10–20 min at peak (bus 220 runs 24 h); cash €2.40, Leap card €1.70 with a €6 daily cap. Commuter trains from Kent Station reach Cobh and Midleton in 25 min for about €5 single. Taxis are metered and card-friendly.

Watch out

Safety

Cork is a safe city by European standards. The real risks are the weather, uneven pavements after rain, and late-night drink crowds in the city centre: keep to lit streets and use a metered taxi.
  • Bring a car into the centre only if you must: use the Black Ash park & ride (€5 (≈ US$6) all day, free shuttle, last bus 20:00, gates locked 20:30).
  • Crawford Art Gallery is closed for rebuilding until around mid-2028: check before you plan around it.
  • Book Blarney Castle and the Jameson Midleton tour ahead in summer; both sell out on fine weekends.
  • Rain arrives fast and sideways: a packable shell beats an umbrella in the city centre.
