Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Bantry sits at the head of a 35 km bay where three Cork peninsulas meet, so it works as a base rather than a stop: sleep here, drive Sheep's Head one day and Beara the next. The town itself is a square, a market, a big house and gardens, and a ferry to Whiddy Island. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night only makes sense as a break on the Cork–Kerry road.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see the peninsulas: Sheep's Head is a loop of narrow coast and ridge roads, and Beara and Mizen Head need the same. In town everything is walkable in 10 minutes. Bus Éireann 236 links Cork (2 h) with Bantry and continues to Glengarriff and Castletownbere; bus 270 comes from Killarney via Kenmare; Local Link 232 runs along Sheep's Head to Ahakista and Kilcrohane. O'Donovans on Market Street hires and repairs bikes. The Whiddy Island ferry takes foot passengers only, 15 min from the pier 500 m west of town.

Sheep's Head peninsula and lighthouse

go

Door to door: Half to full day

Drive the Goat's Path Road from Bantry through Durrus, Ahakista and Kilcrohane, then the lane west to the lighthouse

Narrow single-track in places; stop at the Mt Seefin trailhead layby for the 1 km climb.

Whiddy Island

go

Door to door: 2–3 h

15 min foot-passenger ferry from the pier 500 m west of town

Low farmland, no cars carried; adult return about €8.

Gougane Barra

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive via Kealkill into the Shehy mountains

Lake source of the River Lee, with an island oratory and pilgrimage site.

Castletownbere and the Beara Peninsula

overnight

Door to door: 1–1.5 h each way

Drive the N71 north then the coast road; bus 232 also runs from Bantry

Too much coast for a rushed return; sleep a night on Beara.

Skibbereen and Mizen Head

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive south via Durrus and Ballydehob

Combine with the Mizen Head footbridge and signal station.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Wolfe Tone Square and The Quay

Walk to pubs, restaurants and the market; the Maritime Hotel is here. Best for a car-free night.

Glengarriff Road (north edge)

B&Bs and the Supervalu side of the harbour; 5–10 min walk into the square.

Seafield and the N71 west

Bantry House and the Westlodge Hotel; 15–20 min walk from the centre, so you want a car.

Ballylickey, 5 km north

Country-house hotels and a campsite on the N71 towards Glengarriff; quiet, needs a car.

Durrus and Sheep's Head villages

B&Bs and self-catering on the peninsula itself; 15–30 min drive from Bantry, very quiet at night.

Watch out

Safety

Bantry is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are single-track peninsula roads, fast Atlantic weather and cold water at the coast: drive in daylight and tell someone your route on the trails.
  • Peninsula roads are single-track with passing places and no lighting: drive them in daylight and pull in for oncoming cars.
  • Buses serve the town, not the coast roads or trailheads — do not plan a car-free peninsula day.
  • Many B&Bs, cafés and the campsite close outside the Easter–October season; check before booking a winter trip.
  • The Local Link bus from Skibbereen must be booked ahead by phone.
  • Atlantic weather changes fast: bring a waterproof layer even in July.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Bantry. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (wet, short days, some places closed) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 5 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for ORK: bus 236 from Cork city field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Wolfe Tone Square, The Quay, Glengarriff Road, Seafield.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Bantry House gardens, Whiddy ferry, Sheep's Head lighthouse, Gougane Barra) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal-closure fixtures so winter arrivals get a clear skip signal.
