Give Cheongju one full day for Sangdangsanseong and the early-printing museums, or skip it unless you land at CJJ or need a cheap base near Daejeon.
Cheongju is the capital of North Chungcheong and the city behind jikji, the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type. The original is in France, but the Heungdeok Temple site and the Early Printing Museum tell the story. Sights sit on the edge of town and the bus network is hard to read, so most travellers use Cheongju as a one-night stop or a day trip from Daejeon rather than a base.

City buses cost about ₩1,450 a ride and cover the whole city, but routes and Korean-only signage make them slow to learn. Taxis are cheap and quick and are the practical way to reach Sangdangsanseong, Cheongnamdae and the museums. Downtown is walkable.

Safety
- Sangdangsanseong, Cheongnamdae and Daecheong Dam are outside the centre: budget taxi or bus time, not walking.
- Cheongju National Museum closes Mondays; Cheongnamdae has a last entry in the afternoon — check before you go.
- The jikji itself is not in Cheongju: the surviving copy is held in France.
- Summer brings the year's heaviest rain (July–August); winter mornings drop below freezing.
