Tenterden is a small Kentish town of about 7,700 people with a broad Georgian and Victorian high street on the A28. It was once a Cinque Port, though the sea is long gone. The sights are few and close together, so most visitors see it in a half-day or sleep one night and use it as a base for the Kent and East Sussex Railway, Smallhythe Place and the vineyards around Biddenden.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Buses run to Ashford and Headcorn, but for Smallhythe, Hole Park and the vineyards you need a car or a taxi. Taxi firms in town include St Michael's Car Hire and Aero Cars.

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are the A28 traffic on the high street, unlit lanes after dark and seasonal closures that leave you with nothing open.
  • The A28 runs straight down the high street: traffic is constant, so cross with care.
  • Tenterden Town Hall was under restoration in 2025: check before planning around it.
  • Smallhythe Place and Hole Park open only in season, and Hole Park only on some days from July: check ahead.
