Valka and Estonian Valga are one town cut by a border that has been open since 2007, so the practical base is the bigger Estonian half. Valka itself holds a small museum, a church tower and a war memorial, and the bus station sits beside the crossing. Most travellers pass through on the Riga–Valmiera–Tartu road or stop one night to see both halves.

Walk. The centre is flat and small, and the Estonian half is a few minutes across the former crossing points. Local buses run within the town but are not needed for the sights.

Watch out

Safety

Quiet and small; the practical risks are winter ice on pavements and the derelict station building. Carry ID for travel on both sides of the border.
  • Estonia and Latvia are in the same time zone, so no clock change when you cross.
  • Food and beds are better on the Estonian side; Valka's own options are limited.
  • The former railway station building is derelict: look from outside, do not enter.
  • Carry your passport or ID: it is normal travel ID on both sides of the border.
