Delfzijl is a working harbour town of about 20,000 people on the Ems estuary, 37 minutes by train from Groningen. It has a small, walkable centre, a sea promenade, a tiny beach and a ferry link to Germany in summer. Outside the DelfSail and Havendagen events there is little to hold you for more than a night, and most travellers treat it as a half-day or a stop on the way to Eemshaven or Borkum.

Getting around

The centre and harbour are small enough to walk in 20–30 minutes end to end. There is no regular bike rental in town — ask at the tourist office. Trains run to Groningen roughly every 30 minutes and stop at Delfzijl West as well as the central station. Buses reach Appingedam, Winschoten, Uithuizen and villages in the area.

Watch out

Safety

Delfzijl is a quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are wind, rain and thin late-night options. Standard Dutch rules apply — bikes have priority, and 112 is the emergency number.
  • The town is industrial and exposed: wind and rain off the Ems make it feel colder than inland Groningen.
  • Many restaurants and sights have limited hours outside summer; check before you travel.
  • DelfSail runs only once every five years and fills every bed for miles — book months ahead or stay in Groningen.
  • The summer ferry to Borkum and Ditzum does not run all year; confirm the timetable before planning around it.
